As much as Chihuahuas love a sunny spot, our tiny companions can struggle quickly when the temperature rises. Because they are so small, they can heat up faster than larger dogs, and those little paws are much closer to hot pavements, patios and decking.
I’m Pippa, and Suffolk Chihuahuas was created from a lifelong love of these bold, beautiful little dogs. They may be tiny, but they have enormous personalities, and in summer they need a little extra care to stay comfortable, safe and happy.
Here are my practical tips for keeping your Chihuahua cool during warm UK weather.
1. Walk early or late, never in the hottest part of the day
On hot days, avoid walking your Chihuahua during the middle of the day. Early morning and later evening are much safer, especially during heatwaves.
Before you step out, place the back of your hand on the pavement for a few seconds. If it feels too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your dog’s paws.

2. Protect those tiny paws
Chihuahua paws are delicate, and hot ground can make them sore very quickly. After walks, check their pads for dryness, redness or irritation.
A paw balm can help keep paws soft and protected, especially if your Chihuahua is walking on dry grass, warm pavement or rough garden paths.

3. Keep cool treats ready
One of the easiest ways to help your Chihuahua cool down is with a dog-friendly frozen treat. They feel like a little summer luxury, but they are also a useful way to encourage slow licking and cooling.
Product pick: Frozzys Dog Ice Cream – 4 x 85g
This is a lovely option for hot afternoons in the garden, after a gentle evening walk, or as a cooling enrichment treat.

4. Always have fresh water available
Chihuahuas are little, but they still need constant access to fresh water, especially in warm weather. Keep a bowl indoors, another in the garden, and take water with you if you are going out.
If your Chihuahua is fussy, try placing bowls in different areas of the home. Some dogs prefer drinking away from their food area or in a quieter spot.

5. Create shady rest spots
A Chihuahua will often seek out a sunbeam, but they still need somewhere cool to retreat. Make sure they have access to shade, a cool room, and a soft bed away from direct sunlight.
A cosy blanket in a shaded corner can help them feel safe while staying out of the heat.

6. Use a carrier for tired little legs
In hot weather, even a short walk can feel like a lot for a Chihuahua. A carrier can be helpful if you are travelling, going to a dog-friendly café, visiting friends, or heading somewhere where little legs may tire quickly.
Product pick: Small Dog Carrier Messenger Style – Black, Pink or Grey
Just remember: carriers should never become too warm inside, so keep them well ventilated and out of direct sun.
7. Know the signs your Chihuahua is too hot
Watch for signs such as heavy panting, drooling, weakness, confusion, wobbling, vomiting or your dog seeming unusually tired. If you are worried your Chihuahua may be overheating, move them somewhere cool, offer water, and contact your vet straight away.
Final thoughts from Pippa
Summer can be lovely for Chihuahuas, but it needs a little planning. Shorter walks, cool treats, fresh water, paw care and shaded rest spots can make all the difference.
At Suffolk Chihuahuas, I always think our little dogs deserve comfort with a dash of character — practical, but still a bit fabulous.
